HB Teapot

-With this project, I learned how to hollow out a solid, handbuilt form. I'm also learning to work with velvet underglazes.
-I came up with this concept in 10th grade, but it was my first clay project and I wasn't ambitious enough to attempt it.  I felt like I should be able to do it now that I'm in ceramics 2.
-The most obvious principle of design is movement.  The wrapping veins-mostly from the way I paint it- will hopefully allow the viewer to imagine blood coursing through the heart.

Sgraffito

Sgraffito- decorating pottery by painting the entire piece and then scratching away the paint and surface clay into a design.

An example of sgraffito with a negative design

I liked this technique because it's a new and interesting way to decorate, not just by painting.  It's easy to fix if you mess up carving because you can just paint over your mistake.  I didn't like how clay dust got all over the outside and got all scratchy and imposible to fix.  I would probably try sgraffito again.

I miss you too, Mrs. Gleeson!

1.  This summer I went to the summer language institute for Spanish at UVA.  It covered 4 semesters of UVA Spanish and was 8 weeks long from 9-6:30 every day.  It was a very draining but also enriching experience. I was the youngest person in the class and I had never taken Spanish before, but I made alot of really close friends and I can now speak a second language (sort of).
2. I didn't really have much time to do anything this summer other than study as you can see above...the best movie I've seen lately is probably World's End.
3. Some kind of wheel piece that has a function other than being a vase, teapot, etc that you have to add unusual components to after taking it off the wheel.
